Objectification of Women in the Music Industry

What They Say and What I Say

The portrayal of women as sex obejects is not justified.  But people stiil support objectification in the music industry.

What They Say:

Artists such as Trinia, Lil Kim and Foxy Brown are starting a feminist movement because they are making themselves equal to male hip hop artists who also rap about sex freely and explictly as these female artists do (Ford 2).

What I Say:

I disagree that these female artisit are apart of any feminist movement in the music industry.  If these three female artisit wanted to be part of a feminist movement they should present themselves in a more positive light, a light where women are more than just sexual objects, a light where they are popular artists in the music industry that have overccome the pressure of record companies trying to change them for money.  By objectifing themselves they are saying that they are no more than sex objects because the public only sees them presenting themselves this way, nothing more.

What They Say:

Women in the backdrops of music videos are changing the standard of beauty by presenting the mainstream public with women who are sexy but not the European standard of beauty, women with more curves therefore causing society to be more acceptive of women with curves (Ford 2).

What I Say:

It doesn't make sense that this is the cause for society being acceptive towards more body types as beautiful.  In my own opinion, I would think that the acceptance of different types bodies as beautiful should not be because the world likes to see these type of women half naked in music videos.  But for a reason more than this, maybe just to realize that there is more to a women than just her body to what makes her beautiful.
